Sanctum's AppShield Defends Israeli Government Web Sites Against Hacker Assault
Santa Clara, Calif. - November 6, 2000 -
Sanctum, Inc., the established leader in automated Web application
control and security software, today announced that its pioneering
AppShield eBusiness security solution is protecting Israeli
government Web sites from cyber-terrorists.
Since the recent outbreak of violence between the Israeli
government and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, the
battlefield has shifted from the real world to the cyber world.
Last week, media sources reported that several Israeli government
Web sites, including those for the Ministry of Foreign Affaires,
the Israeli parliament (Knessett) and the Army were attacked by
an organized effort of Palestinian sympathizers.
In collaboration with NetVision, Israel's largest Internet
service provider (ISP) and host to several government Web
sites, Sanctum installed AppShield, its market-leading eBusiness
application security solution. In just 48 hours, AppShield provided
the defense that NetVision required to secure their customers. Since
then, AppShield has successfully prevented hackers from shutting down,
breaking into or defacing the Israeli government's Web presence, while
the on-going attacks are continuing.
"Sanctum and AppShield have been invaluable in our efforts to provide
our customers the best security measures," said Gilad Rabinowitz,
NetVision's president and CEO. "As hackers moved from relatively
unsophisticated 'denial of service' attacks to more complex,
application-focused efforts to try to penetrate and deface the
sites, we realized that we needed a much more robust, autonomous
security solution that went beyond a firewall. That's when we
called on Sanctum. AppShield has really been amazing, providing
us with a level of security that we simply could not have achieved
by other means, certainly not in the timeframe we had."
"This is quite possibly the most visible, most demanding, real world
test any Web security solution has ever endured," noted Peggy Weigle,
Sanctum's president and CEO. "So far, AppShield has passed with
flying colors. While the motivations of the hackers in this conflict
are political, the techniques and methods they employ are identical
to those that hackers use on a daily basis to compromise eBusinesses.
We often say that eBusiness security is the equivalent of national
security, here is a case where they are, in fact, one in the same."
About AppShield
AppShield is the first solution to provide complete application-level
security for eBusinesses. Developed to meet the time-to-market demands
of the online environment, AppShield secures Web sites by blocking any
type of application manipulation through the browser. It blocks hacks,
logs them and sends a warning to the perpetrator, while alerting the
eBusiness to the hacker's identity and to the time and location of the hack.
AppShield ensures an enterprise's valuable digital content is secure so
the company can focus developer resources on making money versus
debugging and patching existing applications.
