Security Software Achieves Consistent Levels of Scalability, Reliability, and Predictability
Santa Clara, Calif. - January 29, 2001 -
Sanctum, Inc., the established leader in automated Web application
control and security software, today announced results from
a performance study conducted by eTesting Labs proving that
AppShield consistently delivers reliable security protection
at the Web application level without diminishing site performance
In the test, commissioned by Sanctum, AppShield 3.0 demonstrated
consistent and reliable performance required for enterprise level
web security. eTesting Labs simulated a typical user load by
simultaneously sending and retrieving multiple types of requests
to the server in an effort to mirror a typical enterprise usage
scenario. These findings were consistent as server activity increased.
Even at more than 90% utilization, AppShield was shown to scale
consistently and reliably.
Ultimately the performance and speed at which a user is able
to access and retrieve information from a site affects a
company's bottom line. Diminished site performance can lead
to abandoned shopping carts, customer frustration and general
dissatisfaction with the Web experience. The findings of the
report indicate that the additional protection AppShield provides
is virtually transparent, with no significant increase in the
time it takes for a Web page to be displayed to the end user.
"The performance metrics affirm what we already know from
our customers' experiences and validates the strength of
our product. AppShield 3.0 protects sites thoroughly and
constantly, without diminishing the speed and performance
of the Web site itself," said Izhar Bar-Gad, CTO, Sanctum, Inc.
"These lab findings prove AppShield is a consistent and
reliable tool for Web administrators to defend their sites-and
protect valuable digital assets."
AppShield secures a site by detecting, preventing, logging
and alerting administrators to any type of application
manipulation through a Web browser. It is the first product
that provides autonomous protection against hacks at the
application level, allowing businesses to focus IT and
engineering resources on developing new products and
services, not debugging and patching existing applications.
The eTesting Labs test report states that, "Sanctum's
AppShield software has performed reliably and predictably at
every level of utilization. This was evident in the throughput
and hits per second analysis, which demonstrated consistent
linear behavior across the scale, from nearly zero to 100
percent." To view the full report visit

Testing Methodology
eTesting Labs conducted the tests with AppShield 3.0 NT version
on an 866MHz PIII with 24 clients running RadView's WebLoad to
generate http and https requests from multiple concurrent users
and to capture the throughput, hits per second and latency results.
The requests were 60 percent static and 40 percent dynamic,
simulating a real life experience. AppShield used a typical
production configuration as defined by Sanctum. eTesting Labs
subtracted the Web server latency from the total round trip
time to get the net AppShield latency. The maximum sustained
performance measurements were 9Mb throughput, 119 hits per
second and 8 milliseconds latency.
