Americans Believe That Social Security Numbers and Credit Card
Information Are "Most Dangerous In The Wrong Hands"
Santa Clara, Calif. - April 17, 2001 -
Americans who use the Internet are most fearful of Social Security and credit
card numbers being stolen by criminals and believe the Internet is where their
personal information is most vulnerable (41%), followed by dishonest phone order
agents in a distant second (19%), according to the results of a poll released today.
The poll was commissioned by Sanctum, Inc., the established leader in automated Web
application control and security software, and conducted by Harris Interactive
(Nasdaq: HPOL), the global leader in online market research.
"These results show that Americans are genuinely concernedand should beabout
the way their information is protected online," said Peggy Weigle, CEO of Sanctum.
"Even savvy Internet users are confusing privacy policies with security policies,
and a privacy policy simply does not ensure that personal information is protected
at all. It is vital to proactively secure Web sites against malicious attack by
today's hackers, who are motivated by greed. For them, personal information is the
"crown jewel"-exactly what they need to steal identities, manipulate funds in bank
accounts and falsify credit information."
"Any personal information on the Internet is vulnerable," added Larry Johnson,
former analyst with the CIA and the State Department's Office of Counter-terrorism.
"Your personal identity, your credit card number, things which only you would know,
can now be easily accessed by someone who wants it if you don't take appropriate
steps to make sure it's protected. Be very, very cautious about what information
you put out there [on the Internet] and make sure it's going through a system
that is secure."
According to the survey results, 41 percent of the 2,951 U.S. respondents were
most concerned about Social Security numbers falling into the wrong hands,
followed by credit card information at 29 percent. These results bolster the
findings of a report issued earlier this month by the Pew Internet and American
Life Project, which showed that 87 percent of Americans surveyed were "concerned"
or "very concerned" about the online theft of personal information.
The results remained essentially the same across most educational and income
levels, although those with a high school degree or less and those whose household
income was $35,000 or lower were the least likely to trust the Internet.
